Characteristics:

This is another pencil-sized, secretive, snake species. Attains a length of 10 to 16 inches, occasionally to 19 inches. The name variable is somehow more appropriate than the current common name. This snake may be buff, orange, or brownish either with or without a vertebral stripe or may be banded in sand-tan and red, sand-tan and blue, or reddish-brown with black dorsal bars. And there may well be other color combinations. Shiny, smooth scales are in 13 to 15 rows. Oviparous

Habitat and Diet:

This is a snake of the open sandy and/or grassy regions, preferably with rocks or surface debris for hiding Prey items are many and varied species of arthropods from insects to spiders to scorpions
