Tiger Rattlesnake

Characteristics:

This 2 to 3’ long, heavy bodied, small headed rattlesnake has a proportionately large rattle. The ground color of this snake varies from tan or gray to reddish or bluish. The tiger bands from which it derives its name are rather prominent on young snakes but become more obscure as the snakes age and grow. Note the vertical pupils and infrared sensing pit between, but lower than, the nostril and eye. Ovoviviparous. Juveniles similar to adults but more brightly banded.

 

Unique Features:

Small head, large rattle, and broad tiger bands are diagnostic.

 

Habitat and Diet:

Rocky desert mountains bearing desert scrub are the preferred habitat of the tiger rattler. Preys on rodents and ground nesting birds as well as lizards
