Texas Garter Snake

Characteristics:

This 2 to 3 foot long garter snake is usually easily identified by the very wide (1 full and 2 half scale rows) yellow-orange to orange vertebral stripe. The lateral stripes are a pale yellow. It is black to brownish-black on the back and sides. Belly whitish. Some examples have a bluish cast on the face, sides, and belly. Ovoviviparous. Neonates similar. Often seen near cattle tanks, springs or similar areas of moisture

Habitat and Diet:

Often seen near cattle tanks, springs or similar areas of moisture. This subspecies preys primarily on frogs, toads, worms and an occasional salamande
