South Florida Mole Kingsnake

Characteristics:

Primary color of this burrowing snake is gray to gray brown. . Narrow darker to reddish bars and/or blotches along the back for the entire length of body and tail, small spots along each side. Oviparous. Juveniles are more brightly colored than adults. Rearward directed spearpoint on top of head. 2 dark lines on neck. Several dark lines radiating outward from eye. Scale rows may vary between 21 and 27. Scales are smooth. 2 ½ to 3 ½ feet long.

 

Unique Features:

Many small dark edged blotches along back and tail. Spearpoint on head and 2 dark lines on neck. Geographic range will help.

 

Habitat and Diet:

Open prairie, orange groves, and ranchland in the southern 2/3rd of the FL Peninsula. Diet essentially unknown but probably lizards, amphibians and nestle rodents.
