Southeastern Crowned Snake

Tantilla coronata

Venom Status:

Non Venomous

Characteristics:

Intraspecific head-nape color variability often results in frustration when attempting to identify snakes in this genus. This species is adult at 8 to 10 inches, and has a broader range than many. This small and slender burrowing snake may occasionally be found beneath surface debris or in rotting logs. Black head, upper labials usually light, light nape, black on neck 3 to 5 scales wide. Dorsal color tan to cinnamon. Ventral color whitish, yellowish, or pinkish. The range of this species does not overlap that of any other crowned snake. Scales are smooth. All species in this genus are considered rear-fanged snakes that produce enough of a weak venom to help them overpower their insect and arthropod prey. All are oviparous
