Sierra Garter Snake

Characteristics:

Ground color of this 3’ long garter snake varies from an olive through various shades of brown to black. The dorsal stripe is narrow and not prominently evident. The lateral stripes are wider than the dorsal stripe but are equally vague. There are 2 rows of dark spots on each side of the dorsum and white interstitial mottlings are often visible. The belly is olive to pinkish with a narrow black cross band on the edge of each ventral scute. Neonates are similar but more vividly patterned. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are more brightly patterned than the adults. Scales keeled. Found in or near water.

Habitat and Diet:

This garter snake is associated with rocky foothills and mountain streams and rivers. Prey, worms and slugs as well as amphibians, and fish.
