Characteristics:

Ground color of this very aquatic, 30-36” long, snake varies from brown to black. Dorsal stripes are often orange and the lateral stripes are yellowish. All stripes may vary in intensity from distinct to very close to absent. Two rows of dark spots are between the dorsal and lateral stripes on each side. Belly is off-white to yellowish. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are more brightly patterned than the adults. Scales keeled.
