Red Diamond Rattlesnake

Crotalus ruber ruber

Venom Status:

Venomous

Characteristics:

A large (occasionally exceeding 5’ by a few inches), heavy bodied, often relatively placid, sometimes irascible, rattlesnake with a typical diamond pattern along its back. Coastal examples usually have dull red to copper blotches separated by thin white bars but some, seemingly the inland examples, are more brownish-red. Tail usually prominently ringed with black on white. Two light facial stripes, 1 anterior to and the other posterior to the eye end at the jawline. Despite its large size this snake is less inclined to stand its ground or to assume a striking coil than many other rattler species. Note the vertical pupils and infrared sensing pit between, but lower than, the nostril and eye.

Unique Features:

Red dorsal diamonds and black and white banded tail are identifiers.

Habitat and Diet:

Prefers rocky, grass and scrublands, often at the foot of mountains. Primarily feeds on Ground squirrels, rabbits, birds, lizards and carrion.

Geographic Range:
