Characteristics:
Adult at 30 to 45”. This robust garter snake is black above, but has a broad prominent blue to yellow dorsal stripe. The lateral lines may be absent. Red blotches along the sides. Head largely red or blackish-red. The blue to yellowish belly usually wraps upwards to encompass 2-2 ½ scale rows on the sides. Keeled scales in 19 rows. Ovoviviparous. Neonates similar to adults. Neonates are equally variable but basically similar to adults. Inhabits grasslands, meadows, sandy areas with rocks, and edge situations
