Lampropeltis calligaster

Venom Status:

Non Venomous

Characteristics:

This 2 ½ to 4 foot long constrictor is variably colored. Primary color gray to reddish-brown. Some examples bear prominent dorsal saddles and lateral spotting, others are nearly patternless. Spots, when present, are often edged with black. Some may have 4 stripes as well as spots and/or saddles. Belly cream to pale yellow with darker blotching. Dark spearpoint shaped marking on top of the head. Juveniles are more vividly marked than the adults. The scale rows vary between 21 and 27. Scales are smooth

Unique Features:

Because of the normal variations in this kingsnake, it can be difficult to identify. The rearward directed spearpoint on the top of the head may be the best identifier. Geographic range will help.
