Characteristics:
The several subspecies of glossy snake are so similar in appearance and so individually variable that range maps are the most reliable way to begin your identification efforts. This is pale, “short-tailed,” narrow saddled subspecies. There are 53 to 73 (average 63) narrow, brown, dorsal bars that are at least partially edged in black. Venter is white to off-white. Adult at 4-5’ long. A brown stripe runs diagonally from the eye to the angle of the jaw. Pupil round. Scales smooth in 27 or fewer rows. Oviparous. Hatchlings look very similar to the adults.

Habitat and Diet:
Sandy desert and brushland. Despite their large size this snake preys predominantly on lizards but will also eat an occasional small mammal or bird.
