Characteristics:

This big (to 5’+) garter snake has been extirpated from much of its former range. It is now a protected species. Ground color deep brown to black. Yellow dorsal and lateral stripes are variably distinct. 2 alternating rows of dark spots on each side between the dorsal and lateral stripes. Belly brownish. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are more brightly patterned than the adults. Scales keeled.

Habitat and Diet:

Predominantly aquatic. Prefers muddy bottomed water sources. Prey, worms and slugs as well as amphibians, and nestling birds.
