Florida Brown Snake

Characteristics:

This small snake attains an adult length of 11 to 15 inches. It is totally innocuous. Brown to gray above with 2 rows of black spots, and white to yellow below. Dorsal area between the black spots is often a bit lighter in color than the sides. The light collar is often reduced to a light blotch on each side of the head. There is no black postocular marking but there is extensive black on the upper labial (lip) scales below the eye. This is the only of the brown snakes to have 15 scale rows. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are very dark.

Habitat and Diet:

Secretive: This uses backyards, fields, and woodlands as habitat. The diet of this species consists primarily of earthworms but slugs are also often eaten.
