Characteristics:

This, like its relatives, is immune to the venom of pit vipers. Although usually smaller examples of more than 6 feet have been documented. Because of the typical white chain pattern on this otherwise black or dark brown snake, it is often referred to as the “chain kingsnake.” Pattern aberrancies are well documented. Belly black and white. Oviparous. Hatchlings are similar to adults but often have red in the white side markings. Scales in 21 rows, anal plate single. Dietary items for this snake include ground nesting mammals and birds, amphibians and reptiles.
