Characteristics:
In AZ this small (to about 18”) sand colored rattlesnake has darker dorsal blotches and 2 rows of alternating lateral spots. In its south Texas locale the pattern is the same but the snake is overall somewhat darker. Its light colored belly is devoid of most markings. There are 9 large plates on the top of the head. The rattle is fairly large and quite audible. Keeled scales in 23 rows. Note the vertical pupils and infrared sensing pit between, but lower than, the nostril and eye. Ovoviviparous. Neonates like adults in appearance

Habitat and Diet:
This snake is a grassland specialist. Prey items are small rodents, ground dwelling birds, amphibians, and lizards.
