Three very similar appearing subspecies that are differentiated by the length or shape of the black cap. Cap and nape-color variability can occur. Use range to assist with identification. A tiny, 7 to 8 ½ inch long, grayish to tan snake with a light colored nose, a dark cap, a light nape that may be interrupted medially by an extension from the black collar, and a black collar with a straight rear margin.
