Central Florida Crowned Snake

Characteristics:

Three very similar appearing subspecies that are differentiated by the length or shape of the black cap. Cap and nape-color variability can occur. Use range to assist with identification. A tiny, 5 to 6 ½ inch long grayish to tan snake with a black cap that extends beyond the head onto the neck. Concave rear margin. A few white scales or half scales may or may not appear on the anterior nape. Upper labials may be all black or may be light posterior to the eye. Belly white. Scales are smooth. All species in this genus are considered rear-fanged snakes that produce enough of a weak venom to help them overpower their insect and arthropod prey. All are oviparous.
