Characteristics:
Slender, alert, and up to 4 feet long, this snake is usually seen near water. Color varies from gray to brownish-black above with a yellow-orange vertebral stripe and white lateral lines. Light preorbital bar light but usually visible. Ovoviviparous. Neonates similar to adults. Keeled scales are in 19 rows.

Habitat and Diet:
This snake is usually seen near water sources that may vary from roadside ditches to sloughs and marshes. Preys on amphibians and small fish.
